Title information
Despite their impact and cultural prominence, surprisingly little research has investigated the means through which principals’ skills and knowledge are enhanced. The authors explore recent developments in research on principal preparation, development, and evaluation and consider the roles of universities, school districts, and nongovernmental organizations in preparing and supporting school leaders. The authors specifically attend to the support and development of principals’ leadership toward justice. They begin by addressing the central question of this chapter: What makes a good principal? Drawing on research and theory, they answer the question and then proceed to summarize the research on principal preparation, development, and evaluation/supervision. They conclude by summarizing key areas for future research.
