The current college promise movement has been gaining momentum and political attention, however, the historical roots of this initiative are much older. Recognition of the value of education and the role our society has in supporting it has a long history in the United States. Today, there are a variety of college promise models and funding designs situated within philanthropic and government landscapes, which seek to address our education and labor challenges. This chapter explores the current and historical context of the college promise movement, and then addresses the future, including the next wave of college promise research.
